Tinnitus treatments include sound therapy products by Neuromonics, and Serenade by SoundCure, both of which are offered by REM Audiology, with locations serving: Voorhees, New Jersey; Evesham/Marlton, New Jersey; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Neuronomics tinnitus treatment products look and function much like familiar electronic music players. Calming, relaxing music is embedded with a neural stimulus that interacts with the tinnitus perception. The Serenade product from SoundCure plays theraputic tones.  Other tinnitus treatment strategies consist of audio-processing devices, Tinnitus Retraining Treatment (TRT), and counseling specific to each case. Over time, these changes help the brain to filter out the tinnitus perception, reducing tinnitus disturbance and providing effective shor or long-term tinnitus treatment and relief from symptoms.

What causes tinnitus?

Tinnitus is often a result of hearing loss after exposure to excessive or loud noises. Tinnitus can also result from underlying causes such as changes in the ear due to aging, ear infections, foreign objects, wax in the ear, or head trauma. Tinnitus is sometimes a side-effect of certain medications. Other causes can be:

  • Ototoxic drugs
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Lyme disease
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Post traumatic stress disorder
  • Temporal mandibular joint disorder

What effects does tinnitus have?

Sufferers hear sounds described as buzzing, ringing, hissing, humming, roaring, or whistling that are not actually present in the environment. Tinnitus sounds can be almost constant or they can come and go.  Many sufferers of tinnitus are sleep deprived due to irregular sleep patterns. Common Effects of Sleep Deprivation include:

  • Aching muscles
  • Irritability
  • Diabetes-Type 2
  • Inability to relax
  • Loss of sleep
  • Headaches
  • Weight gain/obesity
  • Depression
  • Impatience
  • Lack of concentration
  • Sensitivity to loud sounds/ hyperacusis
  • Decreased concentration/ADHD-like symptoms
  • Negative impact on social life

Medications are often prescribed to cover some of the symptoms tinnitus causes. However, these medications typically do not treat the tinnitus itself. This means you’ll most likely still hear the ringing, buzzing or other noises but your side effects might diminish.

When should you or a loved one get checked for tinnitus?

It is estimated that 10% to 15% of adults have prolonged tinnitus requiring medical evaluation. Approximately 50 million Americans suffer from tinnitus, with 2 million Americans suffering from severe tinnitus. The problem is especially significant in the military worldwide, with more than 34 percent of returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan suffering from the condition. If you, a loved one, or a veteran you know is suffering, then please send them a link to this page by email!

For those of you who haven’t inquired about your hearing and experience significant changes in your hearing, you might turn up the television, or even repeat yourself a lot because you can’t hear over the noises in your ear. It’s time to come in and get checked. You don’t have to live with this forever. The options made available by the REM Audiologists in New Jersey and Pennsylvania can help lessen those unpleasant experiences.

For those who are returning patients, it’s important to come in and see how your hearing loss is changing over time. If you start to experience those initial problems that originally brought you in, the level of your tinnitus might have changed due to consistent exposure to those harmful noise levels.

What is the Neuromonics treatment?

This Neuromonics tinnitus treatment is FDA-cleared, patented and clinically-tested, so you know it’s the real deal. It is clinically administered and monitored by a trained healthcare professional. It’s comprehensive, non-invasive and effective-offering proven and significant long-term reduction of tinnitus disturbance. The Neuromonics tinnitus treatment is designed to target the neurological processes of tinnitus, specifically its auditory, attentional and emotional aspects. The Treatment is delivered via a compact, light-weight and uniquely-designed medical device. This Treatment is effective and has been around since the early 90’s with thousands of patients treated worldwide.

How does it work?

The Treatment delivers a spectrally-modified neural stimulus that is designed to interact, interrupt, and desensitize tinnitus disturbance for a long-term benefit. The stimulus is embedded within precisely-designed music and customized for each user’s profile. The music positively engages the limbic system, the part of the brain associated with emotional response, allowing for pleasant and effective delivery of the tinnitus treatment. The Neuromonic device is distinctive in that it targets the neurological processes underlying tinnitus. There are three discrete but interrelated processes in the development of disturbing tinnitus:

  • Changes within the auditory system which lead to the initial perception of the tinnitus sound.
  • The attentional filters in the brain which cause the patient to pay attention to the tinnitus perception.
  • The emotional response and the limbic system which cause an aversive reaction to the tinnitus.

All of these steps involve neuro-plastic changes in the brain. Using neuroplasticity, the Neuromonics tinnitus treatment retrains the brain to stop paying attention to the sounds caused by tinnitus and stop reacting negatively to it.

Neuromonics treatment testimonials

“The thing that caught my eye was that there were clinical trials to back up the claims of success. I have had more good days in the first month of treatment than I have had in the last 22 years. The treatment has improved my energy, focus, sense of well being and my excitement for life.”

“The Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment has given me an easier and more practical long term solution to tinnitus. Give it a few weeks and you won’t believe the difference! The treatment changed my life.”

Tom developed tinnitus from an unknown cause.

“It really began to affect my life. After a day of battling the loud noise in my ears at work, I would go home at the end of the day absolutely lethargic.

I was afraid that this condition would last twenty-four hours a day for the rest of my life.”

“The treatment changed my life. Whenever I see people with tinnitus, I say, ‘give Neuromonics a try’ there are still a lot of doctors who will tell you there’s nothing you can do about it. But there is something you can do about it, and this is it.”

Simon developed tinnitus as a result of Meniere’s disease.

“Some people talk about not being able to get to sleep; my problem was when I woke up in the morning. For years and years the first thing I would do in the morning was jump out of bed, because I couldn’t stand lying in bed in that very quiet situation with this ringing in my ears.

It was at the point where I’d be saying half a dozen times a day ‘This is driving me crazy.’ I had to find something.”

“It’s made life more tolerable. I sometimes listen to the treatment when I am lying in bed at 4 AM, and most mornings I’ll fall back asleep. My life is a hundred percent better.”

Chris developed tinnitus as a result of a car accident and head trauma.
